Lotusphere: Meet the developers lab!

Every year I am surprised by how many people that do not know about the Meet the Developers Lab at Lotusphere. This year it is in the Dolphin, Asia 1 and 2. Usually the rooms right next to the escalator down to the product show case. If you have any level of technical questions that are not clear or answered in a session then this is the place to go!

I will also be in the lab at designated times, see below. If you want to know the schedule of a speaker for lab time then you can simply ask the podium at the front of Asia 1 to print it out for you. This way you can visit the developer you want to see on your time.

Getting the most from the Notes Java UI API's

If you are doing any plugin development for Lotus Notes then you need to check out the OpenNTF project Java UI API Exerciser. The project is a pretty good reference and usage of the Java API’s we will be talking about at Lotusphere. The tool can also be used to inspect documents, views, etc and the different properties each of them have in the Eclipse world.

Google contributes GUI designer tool to Eclipse!

Wow, perfect timing for our Lotusphere presentation. You can download the tool right from Google or you can read about the functionality it brings.

Tools being donated include the WindowBuilder Java UI design tool as well as CodePro Profiler, a runtime Java analysis gauging factors like memory leaks. Both tools became Google property when the company bought Instantiations in August; they will now become open source projects at Eclipse. WindowBuilder has been used for development related to Standard Widget Toolkit, GWT (Google Web Toolkit), and Swing.

Programming the Lotus Notes Workspace from Eclipse Java

In preparation for Lotusphere 2011 and the sessions I will be involved in, I will be promoting anything related to Eclipse plugin level development. If you have not seen what you can do in Lotus Notes 8.5.1 and above you should check out the Java Doc available for the Notes UI classes on the wiki. Those API’s bridge a lot of the gaps between the Eclipse process and Notes process starting in Lotus Notes 8.5.1. Ryan Baxter has also been promoting several plugin development videos on his blog, you should check those out as a good primer for the Lotusphere 2011 sessions.

Now that we are in for Lotusphere 2011, we are deciding which topics to include in the plugin Jumpstart and the session during the week. If you plan on attending either of these and want to provide input to the session please feel free to post your suggestions here! We have a good set of things we want to cover but its always good to hear what is in demand from the community.

How the Jedis do plugin development!

Yep, that is the title of our Lotusphere session. I have the honor of presenting with Mikkel Heisterberg. Mikkel will also be doing a plugin jumpstart session on Sunday with Ryan Baxter, we will be building off of that and presenting more advanced topics in the Jedi session during the week. In the end, if you have any interest in Eclipse, Java, and plugin development for the Lotus brand products then this is the place for you!

Eclipse sessions at Lotusphere?

While I have some customers read my blog I think I mostly have IBMer’s and business partners more than customers, so I am not sure if my blog attracts the right demographic to ask this question. I know the business partner space does have Eclipse based extensions to Sametime and Notes and may or may not want to see more information on this subject. So I am going to ask two questions:

Do you want to see Eclipse sessions at Lotusphere this year? (Yes, No)

What level of expertise do you want to see for the sessions?

Introduction to Eclipse plug-ins, features and the Expeditor Toolkit
Beginning plug-in development
Advanced plug-in development – using Notes Java API’s, Workbench Listeners, Expeditor API’s
Deploying Eclipse plugins – Widgets, Updates Sites, etc

I do think a BOF is warranted and will most likely be accepted so people can share their experiences in this space with others.
